Complete Heating Overhaul for Larkmead School

PROJECT VALUE

The Problem
Larkmead School faced significant disruption after flooding left its heating and hot water systems inoperable. The underground pipework was extensively damaged, requiring a full network overhaul. To keep students learning during the works, we had to quickly build a new classroom, allowing for the rotation of spaces while fan convectors and radiators were installed.
The existing heating and hot water systems needed a complete redesign, including modernising hot water infrastructure, refitting radiators, and meeting specific requirements for science labs. The main plant room also needed rebuilding to house efficient condensing boilers and control systems. Logistical challenges, such as flooded electrical ducts, were addressed by rerouting cabling and concealing pipework to maintain both functionality and aesthetics.

The Solution
We approached the project with a phased plan to minimise disruption while future-proofing the school’s infrastructure. First, we built the new classroom with electrical systems, data cabling, durable flooring, and a disabled ramp. This allowed students to continue learning while we carried out the extensive work.
During the summer break, we overhauled the heating and hot water systems, concealing a lot of the pipework within ceilings for a clean finish. The entire water distribution network was upgraded, including booster sets for science labs, while abandoned cabling in flooded ducts was replaced with new electrical wiring routed across the roof. Large school sections were redecorated with fresh carpets, ceilings, and lighting to improve the environment.
A key project milestone was the construction of a modern, steel-framed plant room housing four high-efficiency condensing boilers, a Building Management System (BMS), and new hot water cylinders. Temporary plant rooms ensured the school maintained heating and hot water services throughout the works, delivering a seamless transition to the upgraded systems.

The Impact
The project was completed on time and within budget, transforming Larkmead School’s infrastructure and future-proofing its operations. The new heating and hot water systems ensure seamless, reliable delivery, even during high demand, while the upgraded plant room enhances energy efficiency and reduces operational costs.
Refurbished classrooms and modernised spaces now provide a comfortable and supportive environment for students and staff, promoting well-being and academic success.
